GE Vscan Ultrasound Scanner

GE (General Electric) healthcare has introduced a pocket-sized, battery operated ultrasound scanner, the Vscan. It looks similar to a flip phone, allows physicians to scan any part of the body by placing the wand attached to it. Using the device, we can see the inner body images. It acts like a visualization tool. Image generation is based on ultrasound technology.

When it is flipped open, it has a screen display on the upper flap and the bottom has navigation controls. The configuration of Vscan includes scanner with probe, USB cable, 4 GB memory card, one rechargeable battery, AC adapter with plugs and a protection case. Vscan weighs one pound and only 3 inches wide and 5.3 inches long.

Some of its main features include black and white/color coded image visualization, auto-optimization to enhance image quality which automatically selects a heart cycle for quick review and storage, voice annotation, easy user interface that can be controlled with one hand using the thumb.

Vscan is approved for abdomen, cardiac, urinary bladder, OB/GYN, pediatric, selected peripheral vascular and pleural fluid and motion detection. Critical issues like fluid around the heart which is a positive sign of heart failure can be diagnosed and also to ensure how well the heart is pumping that allows effective and efficient treatment.

Vscan is handheld and used by physicians, nurses and also by medical students. Primary care doctors can carry this device as a part of their medical kit, saving patients from having extra trip to clinic. It is also used in emergency situations where early diagnosis can save patients’ life. But it is too expensive to give out to every doctor.

The images captured during the diagnosis can be saved and reviewed later also. Due to its unique features it is soon to attract the media and gather global attention successfully. It would become as essential as a stethoscope to doctors and may soon be called as “stethoscope of the 21st century”.

The CPR helper

I often wonder what I would do in an emergency situation where I was to administer someone CPR. I know for sure that I wouldn’t be able to, especially not in a moment of panic.

This product is meant to help in situations like those. The Pocket CPR – as it is called, is a small gadget that helps you during an emergency. It provides you with audio and visual instructions, even as you practice CPR. It also helps in ensuring that the process that been executed properly.

Though it costs $149, it is a must – buy for those who like to be ready – ‘just in case’. Now the only trick is to keep your head enough in a situation like that to be able to take the advice of the Pocket CPR.

Want to check your health? Pee!

Have you ever been worried about your health when you’re doing your business in the toilet? Probably not!

But just in case you are, or in case you’re too lazy to make your way to the doctor’s office, the Japanese have created a bathroom that can provide you with details of your health while you pee!

It is also called the “Intelligent Toilet”, as in the short duration while you pee, the toilet analyses your urine, checks your body pressure, your temperature and your weight and provides us with an instant health report.

However if you share your toilet with too many people, then it won’t work as the toilet can only take five people because of limited memory storage.

But don’t be so quick to dash to the stores. The innovative set up costs between $4100 and $5850!

Breastlight for Breast Awareness

I quite enjoy writing about medical gadgets, not only does it enhance my knowledge of health conditions but also if I can encourage just one person to buy a gadget that helps them diagnose a life threatening condition then I can be pleased with myself.

Whilst no excuse for properly checking your breasts for lumps and irregularities, the Breastlight is a red light that shines over your breasts allowing visualization of breast tissue. Now its best usage from what I understand is that after a few months a user becomes familiar with the internal structure of their breast making it easier to spot any unusual or abnormalities.

Please note:

=> WOMEN WHO ARE INVITED FOR A ROUTINE BREAST SCREENING ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO ATTEND.

=> BREASTLIGHT IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MAMMOGRAM SCREENING.

  • Mains Charger

PhysioGlove ECG

Commwell, an Illinois-based company has developed a special glove called the PhysioGlove. Its aim is to produce a medical gadget which allows individuals to monitor their own ECG without the need of wires hanging everywhere and the requirement of placing sensors in the correct locations.

Using the PhsyioGlove is easy; an individual simply places the glove on their left hand and lays it across their naked chest. As the sensors are already positioned on the glove, minimal coaching and adjustments are made to correctly produce an ECG output. What benefit does this have? Well firstly, only one wire is required which can read all ten electrode sensors and supply the information to the monitoring device. Obviously there is some flaws in the concept, i.e. the patient might move their arm which would give an inaccurate readout, however as a quick and time-critical gadget I can see clearly the benefits of the PhysioGlove.

PhysioGlove Features

  • Lead fault detection for fast, dependable ECG measurements
  • Recording speeds of 12.5, 25, and 50 mm/sec for capturing multiple levels of detail
  • Full page reports for convenient reading and filing
  • Portability – Fast, accurate ECG readings anywhere, anytime
  • User friendly Windows environment on easy to use Tablet-PC
  • View several ECGs simultaneously on screen for comparison of patient’s ECGs
  • ECG Management System for searching, reviewing, comparing and editing (Optional)
  • Short learning curve
  • Email results including waveforms, text, and measurements
  • View several ECGs simultaneously on screen for comparison of patient’s ECGs
  • Full patient demographics and information
  • Emergency alert capabilities
  • Wireless Bluetooth technology
