We’ve all been there. You’re driving on a long road trip along an isolated road when Mother Nature calls. You continue driving and desperation grows until you finally reach the next gas station. You get down from the car and rush to the toilet only to be met with an unsanitary toilet seat.
However, faced with the slim prospect of encountering another toilet and even slimmer prospect of a clean toilet, you have no choice but to brave the filth to do your business. It is unfortunate that most of us have to deal with dirty public toilets amidst today’s modern society because of the thinking that public toilets are for public use and not for public upkeep.
However, one company aims to solve the problem of filthy public toilet seats by coming up with the Public Toilet Seat Survival Kit. The 3-inch tall metal tin contains one toilet seat cover which you can put over the dirty toilet seat before sitting down on it. It also has two antiseptic wipes for you to kill any bacteria or germs resting on the toilet seat for the germaphobic in you.
There is also a pair of latex-free disposable gloves for you to slip on in case you don’t want to get your hands dirty. If you are on the road often and frequently find yourself having to use public restrooms, then it might be advisable for you to keep one of these kits in the car. If you find the price tag a bit pricey or unreasonable, then you can opt to make your own public toilet seat survival kit.

The Tsunami Escape Pod

With the severely regretted events occurring in Japan recently, everyone hopes that there is something they could do to help out with the situation. One of the fruits of such dreams is the Tsunami Escape Pod.
Tsunami Escape Pod is a 7-foot hollow ball made to fit a family of six. However, with the issue of huge meal portions clouding our society these days, no one can be sure how many members could actually fit in.
The mechanism of this life-saving ball starts at the first sign of a tsunami. When a family sees the tides receding, they would all jump into the ball and close the lid tight. I wish I could imagine how that can be done before the water catches their heels, but I am no Einstein so I’ll leave that to the inventors. Then, the ball would keep them safe by floating on the wave and bouncing away from any danger.
This Tsunami Escape Capsule is invented by Julian Sharpe and Scott Hill – both are Boeing engineers, in case you’re in doubt. The idea came during a tsunami warning at Cannon Beach, Oregon. This escape pod, however, is still under construction.
As you can see, the escape pod is actually a multi-functioning product. Imagine what would happen when a ball is left floating on ferociously rocking water. It will go round and round and bob up and down according to the rhythm of the wave. Therefore, other than saving lives, this ball also offers exclusive entertainment that you won’t get anywhere else – only on a tsunami. The product is expected to kick off in two years at around $1,000 each.

The Hand Crank Emergency Beacon is an emergency beacon that is supplied with electrical energy by rotating a built in hand crank on it. This survival gadget is portable and it provides instant light when you need one. It does not require you to use any batteries and it can last longer than an emergency life flare.
You can generate light by rotating the beacon’s dynamo which is very easy to wind, for at least two minutes or more supplies energy to an internal three phase alternator and can induce 15 minutes of light source.
The crank flashlight beacon’s light head tilts to a 90 degree angle. It has three LEDs that projects out a constant powerful and bright light and on the opposite side is a red flashing light to alert oncoming vehicles that you are there. The emergency beacon exterior is weather proof and has a built in tripod that allows it to be placed in an upright position with complete stability.
The Hand Crank Emergency Beacon is about the size of a regular flashlight and it also gives instant handheld illumination by just tilting back the light head and folding in the tripod. The emergency beacon can also be powered by a DC adaptor which comes along with the emergency beacon. Dimensions for this device are 7 inches in Length/Height and 2 and a half inches in diameter. Total weight for the emergency beacon is about eight pounds. The hand crank emergency beacon is an inexpensive item and the market value for it is about $39.95.

Eton Raptor Solar Survival Tool

This device may look like a rugged handheld but don’t be fooled by what you see outside because there’s lots more inside. The Eton Raptor Solar Survival Tool is basically an emergency radio but with loads of other features.
This is a survival tool in the real sense of the word as its digital clock display comes not only with an alarm to wake you up when needed, but a compass for those times when you can no longer distinguish the right way to go and a digital radio with AM, FM and WB bands. You get the best of both worlds too because the Raptor comes with a DC input and a mini-USB plug.
While those features are already more than helpful for campers and for sophisticated travellers, Eton did not stop there but added some more perks including a barometer and an altimeter, making it one of the best outdoor gadgets.
If you’re thinking about where to put the gadget then don’t worry because you can easily attach it to your bag using the carabiner that comes with the Raptor. And if you consider it an emergency to have a sealed beer in your hand, then thank the Raptor’s makers because they even included a bottle opener.
A lot of people have been waiting for the Raptor to become available commercially ever since they saw it during last year’s CES. And now that it’s available, you might want to grab one because you never know when you will need it.
The best thing about the Raptor survival gadget is its ability to be recharged with the sun’s juice although you have to wait for 18 hours to do that. If you’re in a hurry, then use the AC adapter or use the USB to plug it into your PC, and you wait for only four hours. And here’s the kicker! You can also use the fully-charged Raptor to recharge your other mobile devices through the USB.
Now, isn’t that great for only $150?
